PUIGPUNYENT
Puigpunyent is a privileged municipality due to its geographical location, offering the visitor a large number of routes, both within the different town centres and in the natural surroundings.
1
Puigpunyent
The compact size of the village of Puigpunyent allows you to walk around the interior of the village in just half a day and visit all the places of interest.
The route through the interior of the town includes a visit to the parish church of l’Assumpció de Nostra Senyora (Plaça Lleó XII) in the Vila neighbourhood. This church dates back to 1236 and was built in the neoclassical style on top of an earlier Gothic church. The oldest houses in the village are located next to the church: sa Taverna, the old Civil Guard barracks, Can Felet, the old town hall and the Rectory.
As we continue along the route, we cross over the bridge over the Riera, reaching the newest part of the village, where the Town Hall is located. Next to it is the Pozo Nuevo (New Well), which dates from the 19th century and was restored in 1982. Nearby we find the schools, a building designed by the architect Guillem Forteza in 1929.
The Son Bru neighbourhood, located to the north of the village, was the first organised urban nucleus in the upper part of Puigpunyent, and originated from the divisions of the estate of the same name that were carried out between 1784 and 1818.
Ca ses Monges is a building from the 18th century located in carrer Major. The house was built with stone along the lines of traditional Mallorcan architecture. The Villalonga family coat of arms is preserved above the doorway and a belfry above it.
In addition to buildings from different periods, the town of Puigpunyent has a number of places of significant scenic interest, such as the Comellar dels Romeguers, located at the end of Carrer de na Beltrana, which offers views of the valley of Son Puig.
A curious fact is that at the entrance to Puigpunyent coming from Superna, you will find the Ses Sabates carob tree, a monumental tree with an irregular structure and a marjada support. It is called “de ses Sabates” (” .. of shoes”) because it was the place where the peasants used to change their shoes to bring the best footwear to the village, especially when they went to mass.
2
Galilea
The urban centre of Galilea, located 4 km from the centre of Puigpunyent, is designed as a group of marjades (terraces), reminiscent of the construction of an amphitheatre.
In this village you can take a tour of the most outstanding places, starting with the Immaculada Concepció’s parish church, blessed in 1810, an architectural ensemble made up of the church, the bell tower, the rectory and the cemetery.
Galilea has the only casa de neu (snow house) in Mallorca located in an urban centre. Specifically, it is located in the Sa Mola area and is dug directly into the ground. The construction, made with dry-wall walls, has a well where ice was stored during the winter months to be able to use it during the summer.
Among the other elements included in the route through Galilea are the windmills of Can Soler, which remained in use until 1920, and the windmill of d’en Martí, visible from the sa Mola road itself.
The walk through the llogaret continues along Clapers street, with a visit to Ca ses Monges or Ca sa Mestra, at number 3 of this street. This is a traditional 18th-19th century house that was a religious convent of the order of the Sacred Heart and also the first place where education was given to girls in the municipality. At number 8 of the same street there is a building with a good sample of painted tiles. At the beginning of Camí des Rafal is Can Cera, with a beautiful sgraffito work. It is worth walking all along Camí des Rafal, where, in addition to the public well, you can enjoy the view of a traditional house with painted tiles.
3
Son Serralta
The main attraction of Son Serralta in terms of heritage is the Talaïot del Serral de les Abelles, which allows you to follow a route around this circular element, which preserves the entrance corridor and the remains of other buildings. You can also admire the wide views over the valley.
